I provide IT service to small and medium companies and am therefore quite interested in Windows 8. Always connected is an up and coming area in IT service for businesses and Windows 8 tablets and phones will be the logical path for many businesses. My ThinkPad Tablet serves my personal business needs at this time, but to service my clients, I will need a thorough understanding of Windows 8 on all devices, when it comes to market. I look forward to the challenges we will face with Windows 8 and the solutions we will find.

Since I do have a real job, I downloaded (20meg pipe) when I saw Windows 8 available through my RDP, while at work and installed Windows 8 on my lunch break, so I guess I was in the first 500,000 or so...... 8)

I think we will have to wait on the release of some actual production models of Metro tablets to make any comparisons.

No, it works perfectly well with a keyboard and mouse.

Windows 8 Tablet General Discussion / Re: Windows 8 Desktop

Yes you have an icon on the Start Screen to take you to the traditional desktop. You can think of it as the Start Menu in previous versions of Windows, now opening first as a full screen, that sits as a layer above the desktop.

2nd half of 2012 was the Microsoft announcement.

I have installed Windows 8 and took a quick look and I can say the interface is very quick and the startup time has improved considerably, but did Microsoft just forget the shutdown key? Much as I had suspected the Microsoft Store is tied to your Microsoft account, much as the Android App Store is tied to your Gmail account or ITunes is tied to an account. All of the icons on your start screen, like music, video, and mail, take you straight to your Microsoft account, where you will usually find a buy it option. I will have time to evaluate it more later, but my initial impression that we still have Windows, although it may be a better Windows, with a new layer of commercialization on top that is strongly tied to the Microsoft Store. I will post more after I have more time to spend on it.

I hope to have a copy installed on a test pc sometime tomorrow.

Tapatalk is one of the apps that I hope to see in the Windows App Store.

From what I have read Microsoft is going after developers in a big way, by offering a very lucrative profit plan for apps distributed through the Windows Store. Also, it was rumored that Store Apps will be available for testing, with Consumer Preview, which will at least give us a preview of the Windows Store. My real question is, will the pricing structure for WOA or Metro Apps follow pricing scheme of Android Market and Apple Store with $.99 Apps or will Microsoft, IMO, over price Apps as they do desktop software?

Windows 8 Tablet Polls / Re: Will You Buy A Windows 8 Tablet?

I would have to agree that Microsoft is rolling the dice on this one. My first step will be to install the Consumer Preview, which is reported to be available in Feb 2012 and give it a trial run. Microsoft is betting that their solid base in PC's in the business and private sector will drive success in the PC, tablet, and phone market with their bold move to Windows 8. I believe that the success in the tablet and phone market will depend largely on the strength of the Windows App Market and the ability to integrate with current Windows basics, like email, contacts, calendar, and their flagship application, Microsoft Office. It will be interesting watching introduction and the path to success or failure for Windows 8 in the PC, tablet, and phone market.
